Bound to leave?
- The British vote to leave the EU has reactivated the question of Scottish independence. Whereas majorities in England and Wales voted to leave, EU membership was supported in Scotland (and Northern Ireland) by a majority. Moreover, the Scottish question had been an essential element of the referendum debate. In this article, we examine the interferences of both conflicts from a discourse-analytical perspective. We presume the existence of complex identity relations which allowed both sides of the election campaign to use »Scotland« for different argumentative purposes. To collect our data, we tested an innovative method for capturing online communication. As a result, we find that the socio-historically complex Scotland question is both dichotomised and superposed by the bipolar referendum situation.
