What is OPUS Augsburg?
OPUS Augsburg allows members of Augsburg University cost-free online publication of scholarly documents. These documents will be accessible worldwide free of charge and can be retrieved via library catalogues and search engines.

In addition, OPUS Augsburg serves as central bibliography for all scholarly publications by staff members of Augsburg University since the university was founded in 1970. OPUS thus is the continuation of the Augsburg university bibliography (1970-2017). In most cases, bibliographic data were supplied by the authors. Whenever possible, the full text of the publication is made available, too.
What are the benefits of using OPUS Augsburg?
Worldwide Access
Your publicatons are made openly accessible online and are immediately available to scholars, scientists, students and the interested public. They can be comfortably accessed from any workplace which has an Internet connection.
Indexing
OPUS Augsburg offers several search views and facets for comfortable easy browsing and searching. Since documents are indexed using metadata, abstracts and key words which comply with international standards they can be located via internet search engines like Google, GoogleScholar etc. At the same time they are searchable and findable via library catalogues (Katalog der UB Augsburg (OPAC), Katalog des Bibliotheksverbundes Bayern (Gateway Bayern)) and national and international databases.
Archiving
Your document will be permanently archived as a pdf file on the OPUS server. It will be protected against unauthorized changes and manipulations from outside and will be assigned a persistent identifier (Uniform Resource Name, URN) which is registered with the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek (German National Library). All this ensures that your publication may be quoted for scholarly purposes. Electronic documents will in addition be submitted to the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek (German National Library) and will be deposited on its server.
Save time and money
OPUS is completely free of charge, and saves you all costs inherent in conventional publishing.
List of publications
You can link to your publications from your homepage, relying on the permanent access and persistent urls OPUS Augsburg guarantees. In case of a parallel, printed version you may place a reference to the published edition on the frontdoor page of your document.
Citation rates
Several studies have established higher citation rates for open access publications compared to works only published in printed form. The OpCit Project "The Open Citation Project - Reference Linking and Citation Analysis for Open Archives" hosts a bibliography of studies on impact analysis. Publication in OPUS Augsburg means increased visibility and higher citation rates, thus enhancing the reputation of authors and their institutions.
Is it possible to cite OPUS Augsburg documents?
Documents published in OPUS may be cited just as any publication in print. It is sometimes objected that online publications may simply disappear from the net or that URLs may cease to be valid. OPUS, however, guarantees permanent storage and provides persistent identifiers (URNs) so that these objections do not apply.
If you want to cite digital documents, you may follow this example:
  • Schneider, Daniela: Jahn-Teller-Effekt im erweiterten Hubbard-Modell [online]. – Augsburg, Univ., Diss., 2007
    URN: urn:nbn:de:bvb:384-opus-5826
    [01.03.16]

  • Blei, Josephine ; Koepfer, Christian: Römische Technik im Experiment: Studentische Projekte zur Experimentellen Archäologie im Europäischen Kulturpark Bliesbruck-Reinheim [online]. - Augsburg : Universität Augsburg, 2014
    URN: urn:nbn:de:bvb:384-opus4-26471
    [09.12.15]

For detailed information on how to cite digital documents, see How to cite on SciDok (open access server of Saarland University).

All documents published in OPUS are given a URN (Uniform Resource Name). The purpose of the URN is to ensure that a document can be reliably identified and retrieved now as well as in future. Note the difference between URL and URN: The URL refers to the location where the document is stored physically. The URN, on the other hand, does not refer to a location, but to a data set stored on the URN resolver of the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek; a data set that connects the URN to the corresponding URL valid at a particular point of time. The advantage of this arrangement is that even if a document moves to different location (a different server, e.g.), its URN remains valid.

Thus, always quote the URN, not the URL, if you refer to your document.

Unfortunately, URNs as yet cannot be used to access a document via web browsers and therefore must be repackaged as URLs before a web browser can handle them. Thus, you have to add https://nbn-resolving.de to a URN and enter the resulting URL into your web browser.

Example:
  • URN: urn:nbn:de:bvb:384-opus-5766
  • Web browser: https://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bvb:384-opus-5766

Are there usage statistics available for my document?
For every full text document, OPUS offers usage statistics adhering to the Counter standard, which allow comparisons on an international level. The statistics can be called up from the frontpage of a document. Charts tell you how often the document has already been clicked on or downloaded. You can also create your own charts for certain periods of time. Charting the usage data is possible thanks to the Open Access statistics service (OA-Statistik) of the library network GBV (Gemeinsamer Bibliotheksverbund).

What does print-on-demand mean?
The fee-based print-on-demand service allows customers to order bound printout copies of OPUS documents via epubli (a subdivision of the Holtzbrinck publishing house). If the author has decided to include print-on-demand in their agreement with OPUS, this option will be displayed with the OPUS document.
Hints for searching

Boolean Operators AND, OR, NOT

When you use the Simple Search, all terms are combined by AND automatically. For a more tightly focused search you may use the Boolean Operators to combine different search terms.

AND: The document has to contain all search terms.

OR: The document has to contain one of the search terms. This function broadens your search and is recommended, when there are different terms for the same meaning.

article OR paper

NOT: narrows your search by excluding search terms. Useful to reduce a large result list: Documents, which contain the one term, may not contain the other.

article NOT paper
The Boolean Operators work for the Advanced Search as well. You may use them to combine different search terms within one search field. For example, to search for documents of the author "Doe" in the years 2002 or 2003, use the query:
Author: Doe
Year: 2002 OR 2003

Wildcards

In the field 'Search:', you may use the symbols '*' and '?' as wildcards. Use them in place of a character or characters that are unknown or that may differ. You cannot use them in front of a word or search string.

Example 1: chemi* finds chemical but also chemistry or chemist.
Example 2: licen?e finds licence and license.

You may use double quotes (") to search for phrases.

Browse

The menu item Browse allows you to view the OPUS documents sorted according to various criteria, such as publications originating with a certain institute or facility of the university, documents belonging to a particular series or documents related to a certain subject (classifications). If you are interested in a list of all documents by a particular author, please contact the OPUS team.

How do I report my publication to the university bibliography?

If you want to report your publication to OPUS Augsburg, please enter the bibliographic data into our online form. Make sure that the data are as accurate and comprehensive as possible. If you just want to report a document, you need not upload a file or select a licence. After the OPUS Augsburg team have made a final check on your data, they can be accessed from outside.
You are welcome to add a full text file to the bibliographic data at a later point of time. Please check if you are legally entitled to make your publication available online. If this is the case, mail us a full text file (opus@bibliothek.uni-augsburg.de) and the filled-in publishing agreement. You are also welcome to mail us a list of your publications, which we will then add to the database.

What is metadata?
Metadata can be defined as
  • data describing one or more ressources
  • or as
  • data associated with an object and describing it
Basically metadata is describing documents, objects or services and contains information about their content, structure or form. More abstractly metadata is a description of data or "data about data". Bibliographic data sets and catalog entries in library catalogs can be seen as a kind of metadata.

This repository is using metadata in the Dublin Core Metedata Element Set (short Dublin Core (DC)) which has fifteen basic elements. Dublin Core is the result of international efforts to reach a collective consensus in describing electronic objects (in the broadest sense). The Library of Congress (LoC), the Online Cataloging Library Center (OCLC) and several national libraries are dealing with Dublin Core in many projects and are close to introduce the system respectively.

Metadata of documents published on the publication server may be retrieved and stored by any person via the OAI interface. Metadata may also be made available (if convenient, selectively or in enriched form) to third persons (CC0-Licence).

Can documents be deleted or modified?
To preserve authenticity and citability documents may not be modified or deleted after publication. Corrections require re-submission and re-publication of the document on OPUS, corresponding to a new edition of a printed publication.

Can a publication in OPUS be registered with VG Wort?

An author may register a document published in OPUS with VG Wort in order to benefit from what VG Wort calls Sonderausschüttung (special dividend). Due to the technical requirements of VG Wort, tracking pixels regrettably cannot be included into OPUS Augsburg.

How do I create a PDF file? What are the technical requirements my file must meet?
For detailed information, you may refer to one of the following sources:

Please keep your document free from any security settings. You may not protect your document against copying or limit access to your document. These are requirements set by the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek (German National Library) in order to ensure long-term preservation of your document.

If possible, make sure that your text is formatted as a PDF/A document. PDF/A is an international standard which was specially developed for the purpose of archiving documents. It ensures that a file can be read even if it is accessed from a computer on which the fonts used in the document have not been installed.

I have some more questions - whom shall I contact?

Contact the Augsburg University Library OPUS team: opus@bibliothek.uni-augsburg.de

For further information on this issue, please consult the TUM citation Guide.

Even after you have submitted a document to a publishing house or even after it has been printed, you may in most cases deposit an electronic copy in a repository such as OPUS Augsburg (self-archiving).

A study carried out by the British SHERPA project showed that most internationally renowned publishing houses (such as Blackwell, Elsevier, Kluwer, Springer, Wiley) grant their authors the right to self-archiving, though the terms concerning the electronic copy vary. For further details, see the SHERPA/ROMEO list, which contains most important publishing houses and their basic open access policies.

In case you want to publish a document in OPUS which has already been published elsewhere or which is going to be published elsewhere, please consider all legal implications. Do not fail to make sure that the publishing house with which you have contracted allows a publication in OPUS. When entering into an agreement with a publishing house, you may make it one of the terms of the agreement that you are legally entitled to publish your document on a document server run by an institution, such as OPUS Augsburg. Please note that publishing houses frequently impose restrictions, such as allowing publication on a document server only after a certain time has elapsed.

If you publish a document via OPUS Augsburg, you preserve your right to publish your document elsewhere, e.g., with a print publishing house. Published documents cannot be changed or deleted.

For further information about legal issues concerning electronic publications, you may also refer to Informationsplattform open-access.net.

The Copyright Law (Urheberrechtsgesetz) applies to electronic publications as well as printed documents. In particular please refer to Article 53 Reproduction for Private and Other Personal Uses.

As an author you may decide yourself which terms of use shall apply to your document. The terms of use are laid down in what is called a licence. Creative Commons licences allow it to grant rights of use which go beyond the narrow confines of copyright law. The following table lists the licences available in OPUS Augsburg:
Publishing license including print on demand
German copyright law applies, including print on demand.
With this publishing licence you assign Augsburg University the non-exclusive right to make your work publicly available in data networks. Naturally you as author hold all copyrights and are entitled to publish your work elsewhere, to revise or change your work or to make use of your work in any other way.
The option print-on-demand means that you permit the production of individual bound copies for private use (§ 53 German copyright law) by a print-on-demand publisher. This is an additional service on a non-commercial basis.
Publishing license excluding print on demand
German copyright law applies.
With this publishing licence you assign Augsburg University the non-exclusive right to make your work publicly available in data networks. Naturally you as author hold all copyrights and are entiteled to publish your work elsewhere, to revise or change your work or to make use of your work in any other way. Please select the licence you think suitable on the publishing form.
In case of a doctoral thesis, hand in the publishing agreement to the faculty together with the printed copies of the thesis. In all other cases, send the agreement to OPUS Augsburg: Universitätsbibliothek Augsburg, OPUS, 86135 Augsburg.

If you just want to report a document, you need not hand in the publishing agreement.

What does Open Access mean?
"Open access" to scientific and scholarly literature means "its free availability on the public internet, permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet itself. The only constraint on reproduction and distribution, and the only role for copyright in this domain, should be to give authors control over the integrity of their work and the right to be properly acknowledged and cited" (Budapest Open Access Initiative)

DDC).
