Zwischen Stolz und Vorurteil: frühe Beobachtungen und Einstellungen zu Sprachkontakt und Sprachmischung in Südbrasilien nach Dokumenten im Schuchardt-Nachlass

  • The article examines two language samples of the German-Brazilian language mixture from the late 19th century, which are stored in the Schuchardt Archive in Graz, written by A. Friedrichsen and W. Breitenbach. The argument put forth is that although the texts, which are quoted verbatim in the article, may initially seem to contain purist language criticism, the authors actually display at least an ambivalent attitude towards language contact phenomena and the adoption of Brazilian words into German. The way these texts are presented suggests that Friedrichsen’s and Breitenbach’s motives likely leaned more towards entertaining the readership in southern Brazil through linguistic playfulness rather than advocating for the strict preservation of the German language in a supposedly pure form.
