Organic Ubiquitous Middleware

In this Ph. D. thesis the Organic Ubiquitous Middleware was developed building the basis to implement the self-x properties for ubiquitous systems. The basic architecture differs from conventional middleware systems in central points concerning the communication and integration of functionality in form of services. A selfconfiguration and a selfoptimization algorithm are described, simulated and evaluated in the middleware. The selfconfiguration is based on the cooperative social behavior of a group which wants to find a solution to a given problem. The distributed algorithm allocates the services to the given nodes of the network such that the resources of the single nodes are consumed as equally as possible. The selfoptimization uses the model of the human hormone system which distributes its information, the hormones, through the blood circuit to trigger functions of other cells in the body. The selfoptimization piggy-backs load information of the local node onto the messages of the middleware. With the load information of other nodes a node can decide whether to relocate a service to another node. For the performance of the decentralized approach the dynamic behaviour of the services is of special interest because the relocation of services produces load peaks which should be tolerated.show moreshow less
