Efficient numerical simulation of the liquid phase epitaxy

  • Subject of this work is the numerical simulation of the liquid phase epitaxy, which is a critical step in the fabrication of infrared detectors. It consists of the growth of an epitaxial layer - a thin film - on top of a substrate with an approximate thickness of 20 microns. A physical model for the liquid phase epitaxy is derived. The focus of the modeling lies on the calculation of the thickness of the grown layer and its homogeneity, not on microscopic effects. Two different approaches with mathematical framework used for the numerical simulation of this free boundary problem are presented. For the discretization of the nonlinear system finite element methods with special extensions are used. Some aspects regarding stability and damping of numerical oscillations are considered. For an efficient solution of the resulting nonlinear algebraic system appropriate iterative solvers and preconditioning techniques are discussed. Finally, the reliability of the developed algorithms is shownSubject of this work is the numerical simulation of the liquid phase epitaxy, which is a critical step in the fabrication of infrared detectors.
