Aggressive behavior in adolescents as a consequence of deficits in social information processing - a cognitive approach to aggression reduction
- This thesis describes the conduct of a replication study to reduce aggression in young people modelled on Guerra & Slaby (1990), which is based on Crick & Dodge’s social information processing approach (Dodge, 1986; Crick & Dodge, 1994) and which assumes that aggressive behaviour is based on deficits and errors in the processing of information in social situations. Using the intervention study with a pre-posttest control group design, the aim is to examine whether the training programme adapted to reflect German circumstances can reduce aggression in young people and whether Crick & Dodge’s theory is a feasible explanation for aggression. Following the 12-week intervention training with young people from schools and correctional facilities, the results showed that aggression in highly aggressive young people was significantly reduced. However, there was no clear indication that the training also caused an improvement in information processing competence. On the whole, the deficient social information processing model could not be confirmed with certainty as an explanation for aggression.…
