  • Which kind of role the Middle Ages play in curriculum und schoolbooks? Which images of the epoch exist in the historical consciousness of (post?)modern pupils? How should one teach the history of the "dark ages" in school? These are the questions, which are treated by the article. The "strukturgeschichtlichen" aspects of the Middle Ages are absent in every-day-knowledge. Only few facts of medieval life are known. At the same time there exists a great interest in medieval exhibitions, films or novels. Maybe the reason for this can be found in the foreignness of the epoch. It seems foreign especially because of its religious character which encloses all areas of life. The article describes two ways of teaching the Middle Ages in history lessons: at first it pleads for a consequently religious, perhaps ecclesiastical treatment of the epoch. Secondly it shows, that narrative sources, for example the Gesta Francorum, a contemporary rapport about the first crusade, can be used to deal withWhich kind of role the Middle Ages play in curriculum und schoolbooks?
