Ancient games at school : proposals of didactic preparations

  • Greeks and Romans often mentioned the importance of playing as a part of education. Literary sources, reliefs, mosaics, vase-paintings and original parts of gaming-objects discovered during excavations, give us an excellent impression of ancient mediterranean games. Analyses and valuations of available sources and materials allow an active occupution with the children's games. Two Roman tactical and strategic board-games called "ludus duodecim scriptorum" and "ludus latrunculum" are instructive examples of playing at school. Other games worth playing are a dice game that makes use of a special construction known as turiculum and a game consisting of nuts or knuckle-bones (astragaloi or tali). To realize those games in rhe classroom some preparation is necessary, for example the manufacture of gaming-objects. Pupils also have to be made familiar with the rules of the game and its procedure.
