We estimate that 208,000 deep brain stimulation (DBS) devices have been implanted to address neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders worldwide. DBS Think Tank presenters pooled data and determined that DBS expanded in its scope and has been applied to multiple brain disorders in an effort to modulate neural circuitry. The DBS Think Tank was founded in 2012 providing a space where clinicians, engineers, researchers from industry and academia discuss current and emerging DBS technologies and logistical and ethical issues facing the field. The emphasis is on cutting edge research and collaboration aimed to advance the DBS field. The Eighth Annual DBS Think Tank was held virtually on September 1 and 2, 2020 (Zoom Video Communications) due to restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The meeting focused on advances in: (1) optogenetics as a tool for comprehending neurobiology of diseases and on optogenetically-inspired DBS, (2) cutting edge of emerging DBS technologies, (3) ethical issues affecting DBS research and access to care, (4) neuromodulatory approaches for depression, (5) advancing novel hardware, software and imaging methodologies, (6) use of neurophysiological signals in adaptive neurostimulation, and (7) use of more advanced technologies to improve DBS clinical outcomes. There were 178 attendees who participated in a DBS Think Tank survey, which revealed the expansion of DBS into several indications such as obesity, post-traumatic stress disorder, addiction and Alzheimer’s disease. This proceedings summarizes the advances discussed at the Eighth Annual DBS Think Tank.

Among the more than 20 ground-based FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) stations currently operating around the globe, only a few have provided formaldehyde (HCHO) total column time series until now. Although several independent studies have shown that the FTIR measurements can provide formaldehyde total columns with good precision, the spatial coverage has not been optimal for providing good diagnostics for satellite or model validation. Furthermore, these past studies used different retrieval settings, and biases as large as 50 % can be observed in the HCHO total columns depending on these retrieval choices, which is also a weakness for validation studies combining data from different ground-based stations. For the present work, the HCHO retrieval settings have been optimized based on experience gained from past studies and have been applied consistently at the 21 participating stations. Most of them are either part of the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC) or under consideration for membership. We provide the harmonized settings and a characterization of the HCHO FTIR products. Depending on the station, the total systematic and random uncertainties of an individual HCHO total column measurement lie between 12 % and 27 % and between 1 and 11×1014 molec cm−2, respectively. The median values among all stations are 13 % and 2.9×1014 molec cm−2 for the total systematic and random uncertainties. This unprecedented harmonized formaldehyde data set from 21 ground-based FTIR stations is presented and its comparison with a global chemistry transport model shows consistency in absolute values as well as in seasonal cycles. The network covers very different concentration levels of formaldehyde, from very clean levels at the limit of detection (few 1013 molec cm−2) to highly polluted levels (7×1016 molec cm−2). Because the measurements can be made at any time during daylight, the diurnal cycle can be observed and is found to be significant at many stations. These HCHO time series, some of them starting in the 1990s, are crucial for past and present satellite validation and will be extended in the coming years for the next generation of satellite missions.
Effects of atmospheric light scattering on spectroscopic observations of greenhouse gases from space: part 2: algorithm intercomparison in the GOSAT data processing for CO2 retrievals over TCCON sites (2013)

This report is the second in a series of companion papers describing the effects of atmospheric light scattering in observations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) by the Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT), in orbit since 23 January 2009. Here we summarize the retrievals from six previously published algorithms; retrieving column-averaged dry air mole fractions of CO2 (XCO2) during 22 months of operation of GOSAT from June 2009. First, we compare data products from each algorithm with ground-based remote sensing observations by Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON). Our GOSAT-TCCON coincidence criteria select satellite observations within a 5° radius of 11 TCCON sites. We have compared the GOSAT-TCCON XCO2 regression slope, standard deviation, correlation and determination coefficients, and global and station-to-station biases. The best agreements with TCCON measurements were detected for NIES 02.xx and RemoTeC. Next, the impact of atmospheric light scattering on XCO2 retrievals was estimated for each data product using scan by scan retrievals of light path modification with the photon path length probability density function (PPDF) method. After a cloud pre-filtering test, approximately 25% of GOSAT soundings processed by NIES 02.xx, ACOS B2.9, and UoL-FP: 3G and 35% processed by RemoTeC were found to be contaminated by atmospheric light scattering. This study suggests that NIES 02.xx and ACOS B2.9 algorithms tend to overestimate aerosol amounts over bright surfaces, resulting in an underestimation of XCO2 for GOSAT observations. Cross-comparison between algorithms shows that ACOS B2.9 agrees best with NIES 02.xx and UoL-FP: 3G while RemoTeC XCO2 retrievals are in a best agreement with NIES PPDF-D.

Influence of neoadjuvant therapy on success of endoscopic vacuum therapy in anastomotic leakage after rectal resection because of rectal cancer (2024)

Background: For locally advanced rectal cancer, neoadjuvant therapy (NT) is an established element of therapy. Endoscopic vacuum therapy (EVT) has been a relevant treatment option for anastomotic leakage after rectal resection since 2008. The aim was to evaluate the influence of NT on the duration and success of EVT in anastomotic leakage after rectal resection for rectal cancer. Methods: This was a monocentric, retrospective cohort study including patients who underwent rectal resection with primary anastomosis because of histologically proven carcinoma of the rectum in the Department for General and Visceral Surgery of Charité—Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Campus Benjamin Franklin over a period of ten years (2012 to 2022). Results: Overall, 243 patients were included, of which 47 patients (19.3%) suffered from anastomotic leakage grade B with consecutive EVT. A total of 29 (61.7%) patients received NT and 18 patients (38.3%) did not. The median duration of EVT until the removal of the sponge did not differ between patients with and without NT: 24.0 days (95% CI 6.44–41.56) versus 20.0 days (95% CI 17.03–22.97); p = 0.273. The median duration from insertion of EVT until complete healing was 74.0 days with NT (95% CI 10.07–137.93) versus 62.0 days without NT (95% CI 45.99–78.01); p = 0.490. Treatment failure—including early persistence and late onset of recurrent anastomotic leakage—was evident in 27.6% of patients with NT versus 27.8% without NT; p = 0.989. Ostomy was reversed in 19 patients (79.2%) with NT compared to 11 patients (68.8%) without NT; p = 0.456. Overall, continuity was restored in 75% of patients in the long term after EVT. Conclusion: This trial comprised—to our knowledge—the largest study cohort to analyze the outcome of EVT in anastomotic leakage after rectal resection for rectal cancer. We conclude that neoadjuvant therapy neither prolongs EVT nor the time to healing from anastomotic leakage. The rates of treatment failure of EVT and permanent ostomy were not higher when neoadjuvant therapy was used.
