The massive mobilization against the trade agreement ‘TTIP’ indicates that European politics is no longer only a matter of European elites. Instead, we see that citizens demand to be included in European decision-making processes. The ‘TTIP’ (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) stands paradigmatically for a much wider range of criticisms of EU politics that have been tackled during the protests. After providing evidence for this claim, the thesis investigates which citizenship is enacted in the Anti-TTIP-protests and how.
A phenomenographic analysis of twenty-nine interviews with Anti-TTIP protestors outlines their protest experiences from the citizens’ perspective. The performance-oriented perspective allows us to reconstruct how, in processes of political subjectivation, political subjects as citizens emerge from acts of citizenship. The figure of the ‘Troublemaker’ stands for these active, responsible, and EU-critical voices that enact the power to influence European politics in their civic interests. Furthermore, the findings suggest that the conflictual politicization of the TTIP negotiations created a dense, transnational network of European civil society actors.
This research provides an essential contribution to the field of citizenship studies and European studies by shedding light on the enactment of European citizenship and its potential to reshape understandings of European citizenship through contentious action.
Mentoring für Frauen in der Wissenschaft ist ein besonderes Format der Begleitung in einem spezifischen Berufsfeld. Es fokussiert die Erhöhung des Frauenanteils, Förderung individueller Laufbahnen und psychosoziale Unterstützung der Mentees. Anders als in Beratung oder Coaching vermitteln ExpertInnen ihres jeweiligen Fachgebiets in der Mentoringbeziehung Erfahrungswissen: Mentor:innen gewähren Mentees Einblicke in ihr berufliches Handeln und ermöglichen vertrauliche Reflexion karrierekritischer Erwägungen. Mentoringprogramme werden durch die Module Training und Networking vervollständigt. Der Beitrag stellt die Situation von Frauen in der Wissenschaft dar, und zeigt, wie Mentoringprogramme diese adressieren. Darüber hinaus erfolgt eine Reflexion von Chancen und Herausforderungen.
In this contribution, I introduce decolonial memory activism as struggle over meaning (Deutungskampf). Decolonial memory activism is understood as a specific form of memory activism that calls for the decolonization of both memory culture and politics, which necessitates a confrontation with dynamics of violence, power, and oppression. Unlike research that has primarily focused on the contents of collective memory, I argue that decolonial memory activism seeks to fundamentally challenge and transform the epistemological foundations of collective memory itself. Grounded in decolonial theories and drawing from a shared resolution of decolonial memory activists across Germany, I illustrate three interwoven elements of hegemonic knowledge that are being challenged by decolonial memory activism: nationalism, temporality, and the storage model of memory. Through this lens, the paper suggests that an understanding of struggles over memory gains more depth by considering the epistemic dimensions of these struggles. Such an approach opens up new possibilities for peace and conflict research as well as for social and political transformations.
The article analyzes the ways in which claims to universal norms promote, or complicate, collaboration in the context of transnational activism. It emphasizes the potential of a constructivist understanding of universality, i.e. not as something intrinsic to certain norms, but rather as an empirically powerful assumption and a strategic tool. The argumentation is based on two case studies. The first looks at how networks of transnational solidarity were formed and conflicts between activist groups emerged in response to conflict-related sexual violence committed during the Bosnian War. The second example looks at responses to the crimes committed by ISIS in Iraq in 2014 and beyond, demonstrating how shifts within the field of transitional justice, and in particular the emergence of norms centered on the concerns and participation of survivors, have shaped the building of networks around the right to reparation.
Der Beitrag wendet sich dem, für die Forschung am Bayerischen Zentrum für Friedens- und Konfliktforschung zentralen Begriff der „Deutungskämpfe“ zu. Er verdeutlicht einleitend die Relevanz von Deutungskämpfen für die Friedens- und Konfliktforschung. Anschließend gibt der Text Einblicke in verschiedene wissenschaftliche Studien und disziplinäre Zusammenhänge, in denen der Begriff „Deutungskämpfe“ Verwendung findet und dabei jeweils Unterschiedliches hervorheben soll. Daran anknüpfend wird eine differenzierte konflikttheoretische Konzeptualisierung des Begriffs präsentiert, mit deren Hilfe die spezifischen Kennzeichen der Konfliktkonstellation des Deutungskampfes herausgearbeitet und exemplarisch veranschaulicht werden. Eine Friedensperspektive auf Deutungskämpfe und entsprechende Institutionen der Konfliktbearbeitung bildet den Schluss des Beitrags.
